The Girl Who left
At nineteen Marija, a proxy bride, leaves her home in a small village on the island of Korčula, Yugoslavia. It is 1952. She has married Mladen Gavranich by proxy marriage. He is a sugar cane farmer in Far North Queensland. She has not yet met him.
This is Marija’s escape from a Europe scarred by World War Two, her escape from an island that was occupied by the Italians and then the Germans. A chance, maybe, of a better life in Australia?
