"This is my chance. I think it’s my destiny."
Marija
The Story
At nineteen Marija, a proxy bride, leaves her home in a small village on the island of Korčula, Yugoslavia. It is 1952. She has married Mladen Gavranich by proxy marriage. He is a sugar cane farmer in Far North Queensland. She has not yet met him. This is Marija’s escape from a Europe scarred by World War Two, her escape from an island that was occupied by the Italians and then the Germans. A chance, maybe, of a better life in Australia?

Available 1st August 2021 from all bookstores and
Wild Dingo Press

It was my privilege to have known Maria. Her kindness and generosity touched everyone around her. Her indomitable spirit carried her from the horrors of World War II in Croatia to a new life in tropical Queensland. The girl who left tells the tale of a young woman whose faith and courage enabled her to thrive through the challenges of war in Europe and immigration to Australia. A wonderful story of hope and love from a time not so long ago.
